The Arts

Performing Arts

Boston has a rich history of music and theater creation. Some of the best experimental work in the US is being made in this city (despite the sea of khakis around you). Check out the schedules of:

American Repertory Theatre (ART)
http://www.amrep.org/

Boston Modern Orchestra Project
http://www.bmop.org/

Boston also benefits from being home to two world-class conservatories
Berklee College of Music (http://www.berkleebpc.com/) and the New England Conservatory (http://www.newenglandconservatory.edu/concerts/index.html).

Students and ensembles from both schools often play concerts and recitals. A great (and cheap!) date. Look to Berklee for American contemporary (including jazz) and NEC for more of the classics.

Museums and Galleries

Boston is home to an amazing assortment of museums. In addition to Harvard museums like the Sackler, leave Allston on a rainy day and investigate:

Museum of Fine Arts
http://www.mfa.org/

Art Institute of Boston

Museum of Science
http://www.mos.org/

The Center for Advanced Visual Studies

Outdoor Activities

If you like hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, rafting, kayaking, or anything along those lines, New England will be a great playground for you. West coasters complain, but the skiing in Vermont and points north of the border help make the cold Boston winters more tolerable.

There are a tremendous number of online resources to help you plan your weekend getaways - just do an online search for " New England outdoors" and you'll be on your way.

Sports

Boston is a great town for sports, even if you are a Yankees fan.

For those of you looking to play rather than watch, there are a number of gay and lesbian leagues - swimming, basketball, volleyball, softball, etc - here in Boston .

Basketball info: http://www.bgbl.com/

For all sports: http://www.geocities.com/pridesportsboston/

Here's the rundown on the local pro teams:

Baseball: catch the Red Sox at Fenway Park . Baseball season is March through October.

NFL: watch the New England Patriots play in nearby Foxborough. Football season is September through the end of January. You will do cases on "the Pats" at HBS, so you might want to consider trekking out to Gillette stadium to watch them in action.

Basketball: The Celtics play at the TD Banknorth Garden near North Station. NBA season is October through April. Unfortunately, Boston does not have a WNBA franchise.

Hockey: catch the Bruins at the TD Banknorth Garden. Hockey season is October through June.

Soccer (Football): Boston 's pro-team in the MLS is New England Revolution. The Revs play from April through November at Gillette Stadium.

In addition to professional sports, numerous college rivalries consume Boston every year - or at least our part of town. The Head of the Charles brings dozens of crew teams and thousands of fans to the Charles River every October. The Harvard-Yale game, one of the oldest football rivalries in the United States , is an excellent opportunity to observe first hand the strange American ritual of "tailgating."

The Boston Marathon is also run every year on Patriots' Day, the third Monday in April.
